Understanding duration, frame rate and size

Duration

How long one loop lasts. The animation holds on the before, sweeps to the after, holds, then sweeps back so it never jumps.

1–2.5 s
Quick and snappy
3–5 s
Natural pace
6–10 s
Slow and detailed

Frame rate

Frames per second decide smoothness and file size. Double the frame rate and the file roughly doubles.

5–9 fps
Smallest file, visible steps
10–15 fps
Best for social and email
20–30 fps
Presentations, portfolios

Width

GIFs use 256 colors, so smaller widths hide banding and load faster. 720 px is a safe default; use 960 px for portfolio pages and 480 px for email.

How it works

How to create a before and after GIF

  1. 1

    Upload two photos

Add your before and after images, or continue from the photo maker with the pair you already loaded.

  2. 2

    Set duration and frame rate

Three seconds at 12 fps is the social media sweet spot. Higher frame rates are smoother but larger.

  3. 3

    Download the GIF

The animation is encoded on your device and saved instantly. Nothing is uploaded.

FAQ

Before and after GIF questions

What is the best frame rate for a before and after GIF?

10 to 15 frames per second is the sweet spot for social media. Use 5 to 8 for the smallest files, or 20 to 30 for a very smooth sweep in presentations.

Does the GIF follow the layout I picked?

Yes. Slider and split view sweep the divider across, overlay fades the before photo out to reveal the after, and side by side or vertical stack fade the after panel in next to the before. Switch layouts with the tabs above the preview.

How long should the GIF be?

Three to four seconds per loop works well. The animation holds on the before, sweeps to the after, holds again and sweeps back, so it loops seamlessly.

How do I make the GIF file smaller?

Lower the frame rate, shorten the duration or reduce the output width. A 720 pixel wide GIF at 12 frames per second is usually under one megabyte.

Why does the GIF look static in macOS Preview?

Preview shows GIFs frame by frame. Open the file in a browser, or drop it into a chat or social post, and it will animate.

Can I use the GIFs commercially?

Yes. Anything you create here is yours to use for personal or commercial projects.

Need higher quality?

Videos have no color limit and are usually a tenth of the size of a GIF.
